A New York man faces drunken driving, eluding and several other charges after a high-speed chase in Bergen County ended with a crash into a traffic light pole, authorities said Monday.

A police officer in Fair Lawn spotted a vehicle slowly passing him twice shortly after midnight Saturday on Route 4 East at Saddle River Road, authorities said. The officer followed the vehicle onto Paramus Road and tried to pull him over, according to Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Brian Metzler.

The driver took off at a high rate of speed, north on Paramus Road, Metzler said. The officer pursued the vehicle until it crashed into the pole on Paramus Road near Century Road, Metzler said in a statement.

Fair Lawn police had to forcibly remove the driver from the car, Metlzer said. Paramus police assisted in removing a passenger from the vehicle, Metlzer said.

Alvin Mandry, 32 of New York, was charged with eluding, resisting arrest, reckless driving, failure to remain in a single lane, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, no liability insurance and driving while intoxicated, according to police. The passenger was released without charges, Metlzer said.

Mandry was taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center after complaining of pain unrelated to this incident, Metzler said.

Mandry is due to appear in court on the charges on Jan. 11, 2023. Municipal court records do not list a defense attorney.
