Theodore R. Vogel, 64, seasoned portfolio manager, dies

Theodore R. Vogel, a 30-year veteran of the municipal bond market and seasoned portfolio manager, died on Sept. 3 at his home in Millington, N.J.

Vogel, 64, specialized in and was recognized for fixed income solutions, especially taxable and tax-exempt portfolio strategies and execution.

He also had expertise in overall financial markets, investments, risk mitigation, trading and marketing.

His more than three-decade career included his more recent span of 17 years at Neuberger Berman in New York City as a senior vice president beginning in 2006.

In that role, he was a senior manager of client portfolio investments, portfolio positioning and balancing for institutional/high net worth clients and sponsor firm financial advisors, encompassing over $25 billion in assets under management.

His responsibilities included fixed income investment solutions to financial advisors and high net worth clients, and structuring portfolios.

Vogel delivered detailed and data-driven market commentaries, while spearheading attribution analysis, due diligence reporting and growth opportunities.

His colleagues valued his knowledge and expertise in the industry.

“Ted was the true definition of a great partner,” Jamie Iselin, head of municipal fixed income at Neuberger Berman, said of his friend and long time colleague.

“He built strong relationships internally with our client coverage teams, so they had the support they needed out in the field,” he said. “His external clients greatly valued his experience and market knowledge.

“They always knew that they could reach out to him when markets got choppy, and he would calm their nerves,” he added.

Iselin said Vogel was always willing to share his knowledge with him and the rest of the team to make them better.

“He was a kind and compassionate colleague, a good friend, and an all-around true gentleman,” Iselin said. “Above all, he loved his three daughters and was always proudest when talking about them. We will miss him greatly.”

Vogel began his finance career at Titus & Donnelly, and later was a director and manager in the municipal portfolio specialist group at UBS in New York City from 1999 to 2006.

During his career, he also worked at Lehman Brothers and Citizens Bank.

Born in Natick, Mass., Vogel had a masters degree in business administration from Seton Hall University. He also received a bachelor of science in finance and Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Boston University.

Outside of the finance industry, Vogel was an avid sports enthusiast, and had a passion for rugby, long-distance running and biking. He also enjoyed working on his 1960 Mercedes convertible.

He is survived by his three daughters, Claire, Caroline and Tara; sister Susan and her husband, Jim; brother Chris and his wife, Janice; beloved dog, Beau; numerous nephews and nieces; and countless dear friends.
