Microsoft hires Sam Altman, Greg Brockman after departure from OpenAI
2 min readMicrosoft CEO Satya Nadella posted on X, stating that the company is hiring both former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman.
On Nov. 20, Nadella posted that he is “extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team.”

The post also said that the company remains committed to its partnership with OpenAI and looks forward to getting to know its new CEO Emmett Shear, who replaced Altman on Nov. 20.
Shortly after the announcement from Nadella, Altman retweeted the post with the text, “the mission continues.”

Altman was ousted from OpenAI by its board of directors on Nov. 17 due to being allegedly “not consistently candid in his communications with the board,” after which Brockman stepped down from his position on the OpenAI board.

Brockman also took to social media after his departure from OpenAI and commented that he was both “shocked and saddened” by what took place.
While the official announcement from OpenAI says he stepped down, in his post Brockman detailed that he was told he was “being removed.”

In the meantime at OpenAI, former chief technology officer Mira Murati was named the interim CEO of the company. Murati joined OpenAI in 2018 when it was still operating as a nonprofit research center.
